How did Ali Khamenei became the “leader” of Iran !
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei became Iran's Supreme Leader in 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. There are indications that Khamenei may have maneuvered to secure this position for himself. Originally, he was supposed to serve as a temporary leader for only one month. However, he rejected this temporary arrangement, insisting on holding the role indefinitely. There are recorded evidences supporting these claims.
Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani played a significant role in Khamenei's ascension to leadership. Rafsanjani repeatedly asserted that Khomeini had personally chosen Khamenei as his successor before his death, a statement which many saw as a manipulation of public perception. This narrative reflects the broader tendency of authoritarian regimes to underestimate the discernment of their citizens.
Despite opposition from some senior clerics who questioned his qualifications, the Assembly of Experts ultimately approved Khamenei's appointment. The constitution was amended to align with his credentials. Over the ensuing decades, Khamenei has skillfully consolidated his power through strategic political maneuvers and by garnering the support of key institutions, notably the Revolutionary Guards.
